As a Partner Organisation for the above-mentioned event, ICLEI Cities Biodiversity Center invites you to participate in the Edinburgh Process. We would specifically like to draw your attention to the Regional Information Sessions to be held from 5-8 May 2020. It is in these sessions that more information on how to engage in the virtual consultation process will be shared.

ICLEI’s Cities Biodiversity Center will be hosting the session for the Africa Region from 12-1pm SAST (GMT+2) on Wednesday 6th May 2020. Registering for the Edinburgh Process will allow you to access this session, and others, and we look forward to your participation.

The Edinburgh Workshop for Subnational, Regional and Local Governments on the development of the Post 2020 Framework was to be hosted by the Scottish Government, at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, 1-3 April 2020. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic the workshop will now be held as an online event, called the “Edinburgh Process for Subnational and Local Governments on the development of the Post 2020 global biodiversity framework.

Structure

The Edinburgh Process will be delivered through an online consultation (open from 30 April – 29 May 2020) – supported by a series of online information sessions (5 – 8 May 2020) and thematic webinars (dates tbc). The Edinburgh Process is part of the work programme of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) Open-ended Working Group (OEWG) for the development of the Post 2020 global biodiversity framework, as a partner event. The timeline for the Edinburgh Process is shown below:

The process will virtually bring together delegates from across the globe, representing all of the geographic groupings within the UN process.

The Edinburgh Process is supported by a number of Partner Organisation that are actively involved in the preparation and running of the event and hosted by the Scottish Government.

Objectives of the Process

  1. To update Subnational Governments, Cities and Local Authorities on the progress in developing the Post 2020 global biodiversity framework and the evidence base underpinning it;
  2. To seek the views of Subnational Governments, Cities and Local Authorities on the development of the Post 2020 global biodiversity framework and their role in implementing it and feed these back into the CBD Open Ended Working Group;
  3. To review and update the CBD Plan of Action on Subnational Governments, Cities and Other Local Authorities for Biodiversity (CBD Decision X/22) with the aim of adopting an new decadal plan at CBD Conference of the Parties (COP15) in Kunming; and
  4. To develop the Edinburgh Declaration on the role of subnational governments in the Post 2020 global biodiversity framework.

 

Registration

Thereafter, a registration link will be sent to you. Participants will register on Attendify, which will be used as the central online platform (available as an App and vie the web) to disseminate information to participants as the process unfolds. The registration will give you access to the Edinburgh Process schedule, consultation documents, online sessions and webinar links. Please keep in mind that this event is for officials and political representatives from Subnational Governments, Cities and Local Authorities only, who should engage locally with representatives from Indigenous People and Local Communities, Women, Youth, NGOs and the business community.
