Developing People’s Biodiversity Registers for Goa Villages

2018 – 2019
Goa, India
What we are doing
The Conference on Biological Diversity has acknowledged that traditional knowledge related to medicinal plants, agricultural practices and animal rearing has a crucial impact on sustainable development, community progress and overall well-being. With these impacts in mind, this project addresses the requirements put forward by India’s Biological Diversity Act of 2002, which mandates a local Biodiversity Management Committee to develop and maintain a database containing comprehensive information on availability and knowledge of local biological resources, their medicinal or any other use. The database will serve as a very useful tool in the management and sustainable use of bioresources especially in the context of biopiracy. The database also can be a very useful tool for teaching environmental studies at many educational levels.
What we are achieving
ICLEI is the Technical Support Group enlisted to assist 21 local Biodiversity Management Committees to produce their People’s Biodiversity Register, a repository of local knowledge on Biodiversity. Through a set of 31 pre-formulated formats, information is collected on various aspects of biodiversity relevant in the local context. This is supplemented through photo documentation and in some cases video documentation. The register is confidential and cannot be shared outside of the main stakeholders at the local level, such as the Goa Biodiversity Board, the Biodiversity Management Committee and the National Biodiversity Authority.
