Local Protected Areas Sub-Network

2024 – 2025
Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Chile and Argentina
What we are doing
The Local Protected Areas Network (Sub-Network APL) is a community initiative designed to enhance the capacities of local governments in biodiversity conservation and green area management. Led by ICLEI South America (ICLEI SAMS), this initiative builds upon the insights and experiences gained from the Local Protected Areas project (2017–2021). The sub-network serves as a platform for testing methodologies and sharing tools among participants, thereby improving the management of protected areas and other locally-based conservation measures.
What we are achieving
A comprehensive review of the sub-network’s strategy, objectives, and activities was started to reactivate and amplify its impact. One of the primary goals is to leverage momentum to promote the localization of the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) following the results of COP16 and define strategies to enhance regional actions.
