On International Day for Biological Diversity, we spotlight the crucial role of cities in protecting our planet’s biodiversity. Urban areas, hosting more than half of the world’s population, are significant contributors to the degradation and destruction of nature, exacerbating the decline of biodiversity.

In spite of these challenges, cities emerge with innovative and shining examples of actions to protect the environment and shape our collective future.

Aligning with the UN Biodiversity‘s Biodiversity Plan and the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, cities worldwide are spearheading initiatives to prioritize large-scale restoration efforts, particularly within urban landscapes. Cities all over the world are embracing nature-based solutions and ecosystem-based approaches to address the complex challenges posed by climate change.
