Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy in Korea

2019 – 2025
Republic of Korea
What we are doing
Global Covenant of Mayors in Korea aims to raise the ambition of local climate action in Korea to limit global temperature increase to below 1.5°C. Through joining GCoM initiatives, Korean local governments have an increased opportunity to participate in global projects and initiatives, while also establishing an international profile. GCoM activities include reporting to the CDP-ICLEI track, which makes their climate policies and actions more transparent and accountable to the international stakeholders. Through joining the network, local governments can make their climate policies and action consistent regardless of their political cycle, while also being able to compare ambition and efforts with other reporting cities, and learn about more effective and transformative climate policies. Upon joining GCoM, cities can report to the CDP-ICLEI track, participate in regional GCoM events to showcase their climate policies, network with peer local governments by engaging in local events, and expand their impacts through being the first priority cities of ICLEI case studies in Korea.
What we are achieving
By participating in GCoM, Korean local governments can make their climate actions more ambitious and consistent through reporting and learn from their peers about ambitious climate actions. In order to support Korean local government participation in GCoM, ICLEI organizes capacity-buidling workshops for GCoM signatories such as Seoul Mayors Forum, supports local governments’ reporting to CDP-ICLEI track, translates guidance and materials (e.g. Common Reporting Framework, CDP reporting guidance), invites local governments to various networking opportunities on urban climate action, publicizes their activities related to GCoM initiative and outreachs to cities of potential interest with Korean promotional materials.
